The film directed by James Cameron has surpassed Star Wars: The Force Awakens to become the fourth highest-grossing picture in cinema history.
The sequel to 2009's Avatar, which was released on December 16, has quickly ascended to the top 10 after continuing to lead weekly box office worldwide.
The global box office total for The Way of Water is at $2.075 billion. The worldwide box office for Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which was released in 2015, was $2.064 billion.
The sequel to Avatar has already outperformed blockbuster hits like Jurassic World and Spider-Man: No Way Home.
Avengers: Infinity War and Star Wars: The Force Awakens have been replaced by Avatar 2.
The picture currently ranks second only to Cameron's Titanic, which earned $2.187 billion.
Avatar: The Way of Water also has a long way to go before it can overtake second-place Avengers: Endgame ($2.797 billion) and Cameron's original Avatar picture, which is number one with $2.92 billion.
The Way of Water has also been nominated for Best Picture, Best Visual Effects, Best Production Design, and Best Sound at the 95th Academy Awards.
