Nintendo revealed on Wednesday that the Switch's successor will support backwards compatibility. Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa revealed during a business meeting that Nintendo Switch software will be compatible with the Switch 2. While announcing the company's second-quarter financial results for fiscal year 2025, Furukawa reiterated that the Nintendo Switch replacement will be revealed during the current fiscal year, which ends March 31, 2025.
Nintendo Switch 2 Backwards Compatibility
Nintendo also stated that Nintendo Switch Online, the Switch subscription service that includes online multiplayer, cloud saves, and a library of chosen titles from previous platforms, will be accessible on the Nintendo Switch 2.

"In addition to being able to play Nintendo Switch software they currently own, consumers will be able to choose their next purchase from a broad selection of titles released for Nintendo Switch," according to him.
Nintendo released its financial results for the second quarter, which ended September 30, 2024, on Wednesday, confirming a year-over-year fall in both hardware and software revenues. The business sold 4.72 million Nintendo Switch consoles in the quarter, representing a 31% decrease in quarterly sales compared to FY 2024. As a result, the Japanese business revised its FY 25 Switch sales target to 12.5 million devices, down from the earlier estimate of 13.5 million. The business also stated that the Nintendo Switch's total sales had topped 146 million units.
