Google Gemini is receiving a new extension that will allow it to play and search for music on the Spotify app. The Gemini artificial intelligence (AI) assistant on compatible Android devices will enable the new capability. Users can connect their Spotify accounts to their Google accounts and utilize the AI-powered virtual assistant to search for music by song, album, artist, playlist, and more. However, certain app-based features will require a Spotify Premium membership.
Gemini Gets Spotify Extension
Google's support page describes the new extension for the Gemini app. Notably, this much-needed feature for the AI assistant comes six months after the tech behemoth released an extension to incorporate YouTube Music functionality. Notably, if a user has linked both Spotify and YouTube Music but does not indicate which app to utilize in their request, Gemini will pick the most recently used music service.
According to the firm, the Spotify extension is not accessible in Gemini for Google Messages, the Gemini web app, or the iOS app. It will also not operate until the Gemini app on Android is set to English and the user has enabled the Gemini Apps Activity. Furthermore, users will only be allowed to play some songs on the app if they have a Spotify Premium membership.
With this new feature, users may ask the AI assistant to play a song, album, or playlist, as well as request music for a certain occasion or activity. They may also search for songs using an artist's name and lyrics, or create a playlist based on genre, mood, or activity. Currently, Gemini cannot build a Spotify playlist or radio.
To connect Spotify to the Gemini app, users must first enter into their Spotify account and then link to their Google account. Once completed, users may launch the Gemini app, tap on their profile image, and select Extensions. There, customers may manually activate the Spotify option.
While Google has announced the extension's release, it might take up to two weeks before it is available to all users worldwide.
