The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced new regulations ahead of the 98th Academy Awards presentation.
The important dates for the next event include the nominations voting period, which will run from January 12 to January 16, the announcement of the official nominees on January 22, and the annual Oscar Nominees Luncheon on February 10.
The final voting session to determine the winners will commence on February 26 and finish on Wednesday, March 5, ten days before the live presentation.
In a significant move in the film selection process, Academy members must now watch all nominated films in a category before voting in the final round.
Academy members will only be able to view final round ballots in categories where they have confirmed that they have seen all of the nominated films. The organization will track viewing habits using its members-only Academy screening room streaming tool.
All declared candidates in each category will now appear on the final ballot, unlike prior years when just the film title appeared.
The most important modifications are the altered voting standards, the addition of an Achievement in Casting, and clarified guidelines for the use of generative artificial intelligence (AI).
In Oscar history, Achievement in Casting will recognize the collaboration of filmmakers, casting agents, and producers in assembling a film's ensemble.
An additional budget for outstanding cinematography has been introduced to the selection process.
The 89th Academy Awards are scheduled to be held on March 15, 2026.
