Top Gun 3 may take off sooner than fans imagined, as Christopher McQuarrie just claimed that the story is already complete.
During an appearance on Josh Horowitz's Happy Sad Confused podcast, McQuarrie, who co-wrote and produced Top Gun: Maverick, said that the next entry in the high-flying franchise is coming together with unexpected simplicity.
When asked if finding a narrative for Top Gun 3 was more difficult than working on the 2022 blockbuster sequel, he said, "No, it's already in the bag."
"It wasn't hard," McQuarrie stated.
"I believed it would be, and that's a nice place to start when you come into the room and say, 'Come on, what are we going to do?' And Ehren Kruger said something, and I said, 'Mhm actually,' and we had one chat about it, and the structure is there. So, no, it is not difficult to break. The reality is, none of these are difficult to break."
He went on to say, "It's as you start to execute it, as you start to interrogate it, that you start to wonder why these movies are made the way they are." It's not the action, nor is it the degree, intensity, scope, or size of the activity [or] the engineering around the action; it's the emotion."
Hints of a third Top Gun film have lately surfaced.
Earlier this month, Tom Cruise stated that he is not only in discussions for Top Gun 3, but also on a sequel to his 1990 racing thriller Days of Thunder.
"Yeah, we're thinking and talking about many different stories and what could we do and what's possible," says Cruise.
"It took me 35 years to figure out 'Top Gun: Maverick', so all of these things we're working on, we're discussing 'Days of Thunder' and 'Top Gun: Maverick.'"
While no release date has been established yet, it appears like Top Gun 3 is well on its way to becoming a reality.
