When we first grabbed up the Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge, we were impressed by its beautifully thin body. Our astonishment swiftly turned to fear when we observed the phone's 3,900mAh battery capacity. That's not a little cell, but it's very cautious for a 2025 flagship smartphone, particularly one as big and broad as the Galaxy S25 Plus.
For instance, the S25 Plus has a huge 4,900mAh battery, while the tiny Galaxy S25 outperforms the Edge with 4,000mAh. However, it is worth mentioning that the Edge has a bigger display with a better QHD resolution and a more demanding 200MP camera, all of which may consume more battery than the normal S25.
Samsung says that the Edge's battery life will be comparable to that of the Galaxy S24 and S25, however our testing has shown that this is overly optimistic. Let's have a look at the findings of our automated battery longevity tests, which were all done at a constant display brightness of 300 nits. For comparison, we examined both S24 models, as well as the S25 and S25 Plus.
Unfortunately, the Galaxy S25 Edge performs poorly across the board. It takes less minutes than the Galaxy S25 in every test and performs worse than the Galaxy S24 series in most categories – with the exception of our Zoom call test, where it outperforms the Snapdragon version of the Galaxy S24. It also performs similarly to the Exynos variant in the 4K recording and zoom testing. The only constant result across the board was camera capture time, which was similar for all phones. Otherwise, the performance discrepancy is considerable and much outside the margin of error. The Edge's battery life is noticeably less than its brothers.
In reality, the Edge's real-world battery life is far lower than the relatively modest 100mAh difference with the compact Galaxy S25. On average, I estimate a 20% loss in video recording and playback lifetime compared to the standard S25, as well as a 27% lower performance in Zoom call length. Web browsing performed slightly better, with only an 8% drop, although this is still poorer than the battery size would suggest.
The Edge's more powerful specifications drain the 3,900mAh battery considerably faster than the S25.
Software optimization may play a part, but the Edge's bigger, sharper display consumes more power than the standard S25. This, along with the lesser battery, makes for a screen-on time that will disappoint.
Setting aside the parallels for a moment, let's look at screen time itself. According to our tests, the Galaxy S25 Edge provides around four and a half hours of continuous content capture, seven to eight hours of moderate use (like as web browsing and video conversations), and up to 17 hours of offline 4K video playback. These stats aren't horrible in isolation, but they are an hour or two behind their siblings. Keep in mind that these are perfect, out-of-the-box settings. When you add background chores, high data usage, or gaming, things soon deteriorate.
Cutting it fine is an understatement; there is no tolerance for declining battery health here.
Samsung created the Edge with a battery capacity that is definitely adequate for a full day of operation. While the Galaxy S25 Edge may handle light usage now, ponder how it will perform in two or three years, especially at a price of $1,100. After two years, a moderate reduction to 90% of its original battery capacity may indicate danger; a drop to 80% may have you reaching for a charger before the day is up.
Furthermore, we noted that the thin metal frame heated up often during usage, which not only accelerates battery degradation but also causes inefficient discharge and increases self-discharge. This might explain why the phone appears to perform particularly poorly in demanding tests, such as our Zoom call, and why Samsung has persisted with slow 25W charging yet again.
In any case, we didn't need a crystal ball to forecast battery issues with the Galaxy S25 Edge, and we now have the evidence to back it up. If you intend to retain your next phone for several years, you may want to avoid Samsung's ultra-thin flagship.
