The Last of Us by HBO pushed Linda Ronstadt's Long Long Time up the streaming rankings.
According to Variety, the 1970s track witnessed a 4900% increase in streaming statistics following the episode.
The song was heard twice in the episode, once during scenes with survivors Bill (Nick Offerman) and Frank (Murray Bartlett) and once later in scenes with Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey).
Craig Mazin, the executive producer and director, opted to incorporate the song at the recommendation of his buddy Seth Rudetsky.
"I knew the song needed to touch certain elements about desire and pain and constantly unrequited love," the filmmaker told Variety. "For the life of me, I couldn't locate the proper tune.
I tried and tried until I emailed my friend Seth Rudetsky, the Sirius XM on Broadway broadcaster and a genius. 'Here's everything I need,' I said, and two seconds later: 'Linda Ronstadt, "Long, Long Time."' There it is, I thought. That's all there is to it!"
Gary White wrote the song, which appeared on Ronstadt's Silk Purse album. The track spent 12 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 list, peaking at No. 25.
In addition, Ronstadt received a Grammy nomination in 1971 for Best Contemporary Female Vocal Performance.
