Madonna's biography cost Universal Pictures more than $10 million before the diva cancelled it to concentrate on her forthcoming tour.
According to a source close to the matter, the production business spent between $10 million and $12 million on the film's development.
The gruelling boot camp-style tryouts that resulted in Julia Garner landing the role of the vocalist after beating out Florence Pugh and Sydney Sweeney reportedly cost a lot, according to the publication.
Then, Oscar-winning Juno screenwriter Diablo Cody dropped out of the biography because he couldn't write the screenplay with the Queen of Pop around, adding to the expenditures.
"They began spending money on this project in 2020, including millions for Madonna and her manager Guy Oseary to licence the rights to Madonna's tale and music," a source claimed.
"Plus millions were spent on writing and directing fees for Madonna and Diablo Cody's top-of-class writing fee as a past Oscar winner.
"Then there came the auditioning process's dancing and 'boot camp,' which occupied months of everyone's time.
"When you spend millions and millions of dollars on a movie without a final screenplay, there's going to be a gut-check moment," the person continued.
However, Madonna's highly anticipated 40th anniversary Celebration tour will earn her more money than her biography.
"There is no question that Madonna will make more money on her Celebration tour than she would have if she had spent 2023 creating the Madonna movie," the insider stated.
"This was never about money, and Madonna has made more money than she knows what to do with in her career," an insider stated.
"Making this film gave her the opportunity to truly show herself as a filmmaker and artist outside of the songs and music videos for which she is renowned.
Remember, she was married to two film directors, Sean Penn and Guy Ritchie, and she wanted to show the world that she learnt a lot from seeing those people launch their directorial careers."
