The director of 'The Last of Us' explains why Pedro Pascal replaced voice actor Troy Baker. Neil Druckmann, the creator and director of The Last of Us, explained why the team chose Pedro Pascal over voice actor Troy Baker to play Joel in the HBO adaptation.
During an interview with Buzzfeed about the series, Druckmann revealed that they didn't bring back the legendary voice actor to repeat his role from the game since he didn't need to "look the part."
"The great thing about video games is that you don't have to dress the part," he explained. "Which is why Ashley Johnson, at the age of 27, was able to play a 14-year-old child [Ellie]. Troy Baker was a tall, slender, bleached-haired hipster at the time, but when he talked and moved, he became the character. That is why we were unable to cast those same persons in these parts for the programme, but they were crucial in bringing those characters to life."
This does not, however, rule out the prospect of Baker participating in the series entirely. In December 2022, a trailer for The Last of Us announced that Baker will participate in the adaptation, albeit his specific role remains unknown.
According to CBR, many theorised that he might portray either David, the preacher who leads a group of cannibals Ellie sees during the game's Winter chapter, or one of his collaborators. Others say Baker will portray James, David's right-hand guy, because Baker appears to be too young to play David.
