Apple Inc. has agreed to acquire software developer Pixelmator, adding a popular high-end photo-editing program to its portfolio. Pixelmator announced the acquisition on its blog Friday, stating that its Lithuania-based staff will be joining Apple. The 17-year-old firm, established by brothers Saulius and Aidas Dailide, creates programs for the Mac, iPad, and iPhone.
The two businesses already have a tight relationship: Apple has repeatedly promoted Pixelmator software in its marketing, notably at an iPad presentation last month, and the apps feature an interface similar to the iPhone maker's own apps.
"We've been inspired by Apple since day one," Pixelmator wrote in a blog post. "Now, we'll have the ability to reach an even wider audience."
Pixelmator Pro, the company's flagship product, contains powerful editing tools similar of features found in Adobe Inc.'s Photoshop, Illustrator, and other programs, such as layers and vectors. The program also uses a number of Apple-specific technologies, including as iCloud, Shortcuts, and the iPad's Pencil.
Apple, headquartered in Cupertino, California, acknowledged the sale on Friday. Terms were not disclosed.
For Apple, the acquisition provides clients with a high-end picture editing program for the first time since the firm dropped Aperture, its Photoshop competitor, over a decade ago. The business has recently begun to provide professional-level programs for the iPad via subscriptions, such as Final Cut Pro and Logic Pro.
Pixelmator Pro costs $50 for the Mac, while the regular version for the iPad and iPhone is $10. The firm also sells a Photomator editing tool for Apple devices. The corporation stated that there would be no immediate major modifications to the programs, but that it will provide more details later.
Apple hasn't made many recent purchases, although it did buy DarwinAI to help with manufacturing earlier this year, according to Bloomberg News. Beats, acquired for $3 billion in 2014, was the company's biggest buy to date.
