Prince William and Kate Middleton allegedly departed Windsor with their children as they formally began their Christmas celebrations after Prince Andrew sparked additional security problems.
The Prince and Princess of Wales are supposed to have gone directly to their Georgian residence, Anmer Hall, on the Sandringham estate in Norfolk. The couple's three children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis, have also joined them when their school closed for the holidays.
The pair is scheduled to join the King and Queen Camilla at Sandringham, the monarch's beloved Norfolk estate where the royal family celebrates Christmas every year.
It comes amid claims that William and Kate are preparing to become king and queen'sooner than planned'. According to royal writer Sally Bedell Smith, the couple has already begun preparing for William's coronation.
This year's Christmas has a special meaning for the couple, given Kate's health struggles in what her husband, the Prince of Wales, recently characterized as a "brutal" year.
MI5 is also investigating Prince Andrew's finances as the humiliated royal breaks his silence on the controversy. The Telegraph has now reported that the suspected Chinese money provided to the Duke of York is being scrutinized by security officials.
On Thursday, it was revealed that the suspected spy, described in court records as a "close confidant" of the Duke of York, had been barred from entering the UK due to national security concerns.
"Although the king is carrying out his duties with typical determination, he has had to accept limitations during his cancer treatment," Bedell Smith told the newspaper.
"As a result William has been taking on more responsibilities, and he and Kate have been preparing for their future roles sooner than they would have expected."
