Prince Andrew appeared to scramble for damage control after rumors of a significant security breach arose.
The Duke of York, who was already feuding with his brother over the Royal Lodge, was suspected of having a close relationship with a Chinese spy.
Following the announcement, Andrew published a statement in which he indicated that he "ceased all contact with the individual after concerns were raised" on the instructions of "His Majesty's Government".
"The Duke met the individual through official channels with nothing of a sensitive nature ever discussed," according to the statement. "He is unable to comment further on matters relating to national security."
However, Andrew's statement did not explain when he lost contact with the individual or how long they communicated.
According to The Mirror, King Charles made the statement after being told by British intelligence about the security breach caused by his disgraced brother.
According to reports, a guy identified as H6 was invited to the royal's birthday celebration in 2020 and informed by Andrew's assistant Dominic Hampshire that he might represent the duke when dealing with possible Chinese investors, a specialist tribunal heard in July this year.
H6 was previously forbidden from entering the country in 2023 due to national security concerns.
According to reports, the man lost his appeal this week against being prevented from entering the UK as a threat to national security.
"The King has been briefed about this situation regarding the suspected Chinese spy and is very aware of what has been and what is being done about it," an official told the newspaper.
