Google is introducing a new feature to Google Drive that will make it easier for users to explore movies. Dubbed video transcripts are an improvement on the company's automated captioning offering from last year. The Mountain read-based internet behemoth said that customers may now read and search transcripts in videos. This will make it easy to find certain portions of a video because touching on a sentence will guide the video to that point in time. Notably, this capability is presently being rolled out to all Google Drive customers.
Google Drive is getting a video transcripts feature
The new functionality was introduced in a Workspace blog post by the tech giant. This improves on the automated captioning functionality, which was released in July 2024. This function automatically creates subtitles for videos when they are uploaded.
When the service was first offered, Google stated that it employs voice recognition technology to transcribe the audio, provided that spoken words are utilized and the language is English. While the corporation announced ambitions to spread the feature to additional languages, this has not yet occurred.
While the automatic captioning function enabled viewers to see the captions as the video played, they could not examine the transcripts individually. This has now been incorporated with the latest release. When a video plays on Google Drive, viewers may access transcripts in a side panel on the right side.
These transcriptions are presented with time stamps. Sentences are divided into distinct items on the list. The side panel also has a search bar. Users may obtain the exact time stamp by scrolling through the transcripts or searching for certain terms. Clicking on the text will also take the video to that time stamp, helping people to quickly discover what they're searching for.
To use the functionality, users must first play a movie in Google Drive. Users should make sure the movie they choose includes automatic captioning. To check this, search for a CC button in the video player's bottom right corner. Once completed, selecting the Settings icon in the bottom right corner will reveal a new 'Transcript' option. Tapping here will open the side panel.
