The wait for Top Gun 3 continues, but Jay Ellis says the wheels are still spinning behind the scenes.
Ellis confirmed to Us Weekly at the 2025 Independent Spirit Awards that the team is still working on the draft. "They are still working on the story. "They want to get it right," he explained.
The actor stated that Tom Cruise, who also produced the second film, Top Gun: Maverick, is emotionally committed in ensuring that any sequel meets expectations.
"I know Tom is a stickler..." "He wants to ensure that the audience receives what they paid for," Ellis said.
The 2022 blockbuster, a sequel to the original 1986 film starring Cruise and Val Kilmer, was a huge critical and economic success, fueling speculation about a possible third chapter.
For the upcoming episode, Ellis stated that the objective is to make a film that genuinely captivates audiences, letting them to escape into the Top Gun universe for two hours.
For the time being, the focus remains on creating a tale that adds something new to the Top Gun history rather than simply doing another film.
"It's about making sure these characters make people lean in," Ellis noted.
