When Prince Harry and Meghan Markle resigned from their royal duties and departed the United Kingdom, they said goodbye to £2.4 million.
According to The Sun, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex borrowed money from the Crown Estate to renovate their Frogmore Cottage, but they paid it back in full after leaving royal responsibilities in 2020.
The Grade II-listed property near Windsor Castle was a gift from the late Queen, although not in the conventional sense.
"Frogmore Cottage was never actually owned by Harry and Meghan," Terry Fisher of We Buy Any Home revealed. "It was given to them for use." However, they did not have formal possession, so the monarch has always had the last decision on what happens to it.
Despite spending in modifications such as an eco-boiler for low-carbon heating and substantial interior renovations, the couple left with no claim to the house.
"It's more like an extended loan — and when that time ends, it's returned to the Crown," Fisher told reporters.
Frogmore has personal meaning for the couple because it was their first home together and where baby Archie spent his early months. Fans caught glimpses of it in their Netflix docuseries, featuring heartwarming family moments like Archie's bath.
However, according to Fisher, "The rules around royal homes are very different from those in everyday property ownership."
And in this case, the Sussexes' million-pound investment was only half of the cost of moving on.
