The European monarchs appear to be changing their traditions to accommodate a more modernized kind of authoritarianism.
When King Charles succeeded to the throne in 2022, he predicted that his reign would see a'slimmed down' version of the monarchy to reduce the Crown's financial burden.
Similarly, the Swedish Crown has adopted similar ideals, with a concentration on the direct line of succession and some rights restricted to existing family members.
Princess Madeleine, the youngest child of King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia, attracted similarities to Meghan Markle last month when she debuted her new skincare line.
Madeleine did, however, state that she would not use her name, Madeleine Bernadotte, in commercial situations and would not add the suffix 'Princess'. However, the queen has faced criticism that Madeleine's endeavor "doesn't fit" with her position.
She told RTL News in an interview that she "understands" the worries and complaints, but things have now changed.
"A couple of years ago there was a big decision, that they're slimming down and focusing more on my sister, the Crown Princess [Victoria]," she said to the German media. "And I think many monarchs in Europe are doing that, and with that, they reduced it down and said, "Okay, we're focusing more on the Crown Princess's family."
She went on to say, "So my brother [Carl Philip] and I had the option to pursue other things. Nowadays, I don't have many official duties, or at least I shouldn't. So I responded, 'Ok, I'll do it!'"
The choice of Sweden's royal family, officially known as The House of Bernadotte, has an impact on Madeleine's brother Prince Carl Philip's family.
Philip has four children with his wife, Princess Sofia: Prince Alexander, Prince Gabriel, Prince Julian, and Princess Ines. The children will not get royal titles in the future, nor will they be expected to perform tasks.
Meanwhile, Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, launched her lifestyle business, As Ever, earlier this month, following her announcement in February. Meghan and her husband, Prince Harry, relinquished their royal titles in 2020 when they stood down from important royal positions.
Meghan and Harry can no longer use the titles 'HRH', but they are still referred to as the Duke and Duchess, and their children are recognized as Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.
