Billy Joel has been forgetting lyrics for over 10 years, since he canceled all of his shows due to a mental ailment.
On Friday, May 23, the 76-year-old American singer-songwriter and pianist said on Instagram that he had been diagnosed with normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH), which impaired his "hearing, vision, and balance."
According to the Daily Mail, Joel's representative stated that recent performances have 'exacerbated' his illness, and that he has taken a vacation. His problem will be treated through "physical therapy."
The representative stated, "This illness has been aggravated by recent musical performances. Billy is getting particular physical treatment as directed by his doctor and has been instructed not to perform during this recuperation period.
Normal pressure hydrocephalus is caused by excess fluid collection in the ventricles or spaces of the brain and spinal cord. The fluid not only puts pressure on these body components, but it also causes symptoms such as bladder control issues, cognitive dysfunction, walking difficulties, and memory impairment.
Notably, this occurs as additional fluid strains and compresses brain structures, affecting nerve cell transmission and muscle activity.
