Google issued a new study on Thursday that details how it has used artificial intelligence (AI) technology to combat online frauds across its many offerings. The research focuses on how AI technology is used in search, Google Chrome, and Android. The Mountain View-based internet behemoth claims that generative AI allows it to detect and prevent hitherto unheard-of schemes. Notably, the business employs the on-device Gemini Nano AI model in the Chrome browser to combat website-based frauds.
New Ways Google is Fighting Scams with AI
In a blog post, the tech behemoth announced the release of a new Fighting Scams in Search study. The article describes how Google enhanced its AI-powered fraud detection algorithms and classifiers, claiming that the new system can identify 20 times as many possible scamming websites as previously.
Website-based scams often employ fraudulent or hacked websites to deceive consumers into disclosing money, personal information, or login credentials. While the methods used in these scams vary, the overall objective is to fool customers through mimicry, haste, or offers that appear too good to be true. Phishing sites, online shopping scams, investment and cryptocurrency scams, tech support scams, clone websites, and subscription traps are a few instances of such schemes.
In Search, Google claims to have improved its classifiers that detect and categorize frauds using AI. With these enhancements, the tech behemoth can now de-rank these frauds before any people see them. As an example, the report stated that Search has observed an upsurge in fraudsters imitating airline customer care representatives. The business stated that these frauds have been reduced by more than 80% in Search.
Google Chrome has also upgraded the Enhanced Protection feature for Safe Browsing. The mode now supports Gemini Nano, the desktop's on-device large language model (LLM), providing users with an additional layer of safety. The program can recognize possible phishing sites and notify Google so that appropriate action may be taken. The business claims that Gemini Nano can detect previously unknown frauds by condensing the complex nature of webpages.
"Our goal is to expand this protection to Android devices and even more types of scams in the future," the search giant explained.
However, this does not imply that the business has not implemented any new threat prevention systems on Android. Google Chrome for Android is gaining a new feature that will safeguard users against fraudulent website-based alerts. If the browser finds a notice from a website that may be a fraud, it will display a warning labeled "Potential scam detected," with the option to unsubscribe or read the message.
If visitors trust the website and feel the AI-powered feature made a mistake, they can access the previously prohibited material. They can also select to receive future alerts from the website.
