Meghan Markle stated that while she wasn't "out speaking" as a royal, she was delivering messages through her style statements.
The Duchess of Sussex, 43, confirmed this on the April 28 episode of The Jamie Kern Lima Show podcast, when the presenter started a talk about the "Meghan Effect."
"There's this thing known as the 'Meghan Effect,'" Lima, co-founder of It Cosmetics, told Meghan. "How does that make you feel?"
The Duchess of Sussex reacted, saying it was "really great when, specifically, it can help uplift brands that have a great ethos and female founders."
Meghan remembers making a concerted effort to wear apparel from smaller businesses while still a working member of the British royal, and she preferred labels that supported a cause important to her heart.
She said, "There was a long period when... I was not out talking. So, if you couldn't hear me, how could I be heard through my clothing, if that was what others were looking at?"
The mother of two acknowledged her power in the fashion industry, stating that she didn't need to "say a word" about the labels she wore since being seen in public wearing the stuff she picked would "move product for small companies."
Meghan went into greater detail about the reason behind one of the companies she wore, Outland Denim, which she claims hires survivors of human trafficking, is ecologically friendly, and has a B Corporation designation.
The Duchess of Sussex stated that wearing the brand "would take women out of positions of being trafficked and instead give them jobs... by wearing those jeans, I knew it was going to allow them to save more women."
