J.K. Simmons, an Oscar-winning actor best known for his stunning performances in films like as Whiplash and Spider-Man, has scored a key part in a new crime series from MGM+.
The 70-year-old actor plays the protagonist in a new criminal drama set in the early 1980s. The plot revolves around the Irish-American Westies gang in Hell's Kitchen, who make it big when the Jacob Javits Convention Center is erected right on their turf.
Though the Five Families of the Italian Mafia had much more numbers, the Westies' tough reputation and keen tactics won them enough respect to reach a harsh but steady agreement to split the earnings.
Tension between the daring younger crew and the old-school leaders threatens to destabilize everything and draw the Westies into the FBI's increasing crackdown on the Italian Mafia.
While discussing Simmons' casting, Michael Wright, Head of MGM+, was candid: "J.K. Simmons is one of the best performers working today.
"His authenticity and intensity bring an invaluable quality to this complex and exhilarating story, and we can't wait to see him bring this unforgettable character to life."
Simmons previously won the 2015 Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his outstanding performance as the gruff jazz instructor Fletcher in Whiplash.
