The Buckingham Palace announced on Friday that King Charles and his wife Queen Camilla will visit Canada on Monday, May 26th and Tuesday, May 27th.
The palace shared the objective of the royal couple's visit, saying, "Their Majesties will attend the State Opening of the Parliament of Canada in Ottawa."
The King is normally not compelled to attend the Canadian Parliament's State Opening.
In Canada's constitutional monarchy, the monarch's function is mostly symbolic, with the Governor General or Lieutenant Governors carrying out the majority of royal tasks.
King Charles III is Canada's Head of State, and the Canadian Constitution and other laws define and limit his rights and responsibilities.
Although the palace did not explicitly state that the King's visit is related to diplomatic tensions between Canada and the United States, it may be seen as an attempt to alleviate anxieties in the nation.
Canadians canceled visits south of the border, boycotted American booze and other items, and even booed at sporting events when US President Donald Trump placed 25% tariffs on most Canadian exports after assuming office for the second time.
Canada shares its Monarch with numerous other Commonwealth nations, including Australia, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom. Each country's monarch plays a distinct and autonomous function.
King Charles III refers to the inhabitants of the Commonwealth as the "Family of Nations". He has also characterized the Commonwealth as a group of individuals with similar ideals, goals, and actions.
