Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have "hit turbulence" as they attempt to redefine themselves and shed their royal image.
Harry and Meghan retired as working royals in 2020 and relocated to Montecito, California, where they live with their children Archie and Lilibet.
A public relations specialist has revealed the contrasts between Royal PR and celebrity PR, which explains why the Duke and Duchess of Sussex struggle with their image.
Edward Coram James, creator of GoUp, told The Express that royal public relations is about tradition. It is about calm dignity and a spirit of service that transcends ego. "The Royals do not need to go viral."
"Celebrity PR, on the other hand, is a distinct animal. It is based on visibility, personality, and emotional connection. "You're not just selling a message; you're selling yourself over and over," he said.
Meghan, 43, has returned this year with a slew of ventures that analysts believe are a rebranding effort. She debuted her Netflix series With Love, Meghan, her lifestyle business As Ever, and her podcast, Confessions of a Female Founder.
Edward believes the Sussexes are suffering with their makeover.
"That, in my opinion, is when Meghan and Harry struck difficulties. They've taken a step back from royal responsibilities, yet they still have the royal shine (and scrutiny). "They're not fully celebrities or royals anymore, and that middle ground is messy," he said.
Edward went on, "Think back to 2021 and the Oprah interview." It represented a change from service to storytelling, obligation to personal narrative. That is OK, in principle. But if you're continually modifying your image, people will question whether version of you is genuine."
Edward stated that their commitment to their non-profit organization, The Archewell Foundation, is the finest thing for their reputation.
Edward added, "I believe their concentration on the Archewell Foundation is an important component of their approach. It enables them to convey a sense of purpose and effect, which is critical for long-term brand development."
"Ultimately, Meghan and Harry are attempting to strike a balance between being celebrities and royals, which is a difficult task. Their huge relocation to Hollywood was supposed to be a new beginning, a clean getaway from the royal limelight. However, the fact that they continue to use the HRH designation in their private life suggests that they may not be ready to entirely shed their royal image just yet," he said.
