In the United States, we have an abundance of little crossovers to choose from. But it doesn't mean we don't want more. So, when Fiat introduced the stunning new Grande Panda 4x4 concept, our hearts raced at the prospect of driving such a vehicle in the United States.
Sure, it appears harder and more competent than it is, but the charming little Panda has brawny style with steel wheels and the required fender cladding indicating its 4x4 classification. Fiat claims the new Grande Panda concept is a "direct heir" to the original Panda 4x4, which debuted in 1983. With a low price and an increased ride height, that model was an instant popularity among off-road enthusiasts.
The new idea is based on Fiat's existing Grande Panda, which comes in both electric and hybrid versions. Fiat claims the Grande Panda 4x4 concept would include a "electrified innovative rear axle"—whatever that means. Because it is only a concept, Fiat has kept the finer specifications under wraps, leaving us to wonder what powers the front axle.
The brand hasn't announced manufacturing plans, but Fiat's European chief, Gaetano Thorel, told Autocar that it might eventually hit the road. "Surely we will have this car on the road in the future-but not tomorrow," Thorel told Autocar.
Assuming Fiat puts the Grande Panda 4x4 into production, we believe the Italian company should consider introducing it to North America. Last year, the firm sold fewer than 1000 of its electric 500e in the United States, indicating that it is not popular among Americans. However, Americans are enamored with lifted crossovers that appear to be capable of off-roading, and the new Grande Panda 4x4, despite its small size, conveys that image.
