BMW has a long history of revealing concept vehicles at the Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este, Italy's premier vintage automobile exhibition on the banks of Lake Como, and is returning with another stunning model this year. Following the 2024 Concept Skytop, BMW has shown the Concept Speedtop, which is essentially a shooting brake version of last year's convertible. The Speedtop, like the 8-series-based Skytop, will see limited manufacturing.
The Speedtop and Skytop have a same design language, with tiny holes for headlamps and a pointed shark-nose front end. The lighted kidney grille has the same horizontal strakes, and a strong character line extends from the headlights to the taillights, resulting in powerful rear haunches. The biggest difference between the Speedtop and Skytop is that the roofline now extends rearward to form a hatchback.
As with the Skytop, the hood has a spine that emerges from the metal. On the Speedtop, the spine is replicated on the roof by a raised bar that flows into the rear spoiler. The roof also has a color gradient, with the paint transitioning from the primary Floating Sunstone Maroon to Floating Sundown Silver. The Speedtop has unusual 14-spoke wheels in a two-tone finish and concealed door handles made of an inverted chrome piece along the window trim.
On the Inside
The cabin is likewise nearly identical to that of the Skytop, which in turn resembles the cabin of the 8-series coupe, on which both limited-production cars are based. The Speedtop's interior is two-tone, with Sundown Maroon leather on the dashboard, center console, and upper door panels and Moonstone White leather on the seats and bottom three-quarters of the doors. A narrow strip of light inserted in the headliner replicates the central spine on the roof, and various Speedtop insignia embellish the interior to remind you of the car's distinct personality.
The trunk is nearly as luxurious as the cabin, with leather inside and a gentle glow from LED lighting that extends around the cargo space. The Speedtop does not have rear seats, but instead has two luggage shelves, each with a leather strap to keep luggage secure. BMW collaborated with Italian leather goods manufacturer Schedoni to design matching bags for these compartments, as well as a bigger duffel bag for the trunk.
BMW did not share much about what is going on behind the Speedtop's dramatic sheetmetal, just claiming that it had the "most powerful V-8 engine currently offered by BMW." Based on what we know about the Skytop, the Speedtop will most likely have a 617-hp twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V-8 engine driving all four wheels through an eight-speed automated transmission.
While production of the Skytop was limited to 50 units, BMW plans to construct 70 examples of the Speedtop and has announced that orders are now open. There is no official word on pricing, but the Skytop was supposed to cost more than $500,000, and we expect the Speedtop will be priced similarly.
