In a recent interview with Deadline's Isabel Stevens, Tom Cruise raved about working with late actor Val Kilmer on Top Gun.
Cruise said that Kilmer, who died on April 1, was not interested on playing a supporting part. He first rejected and had to be persuaded to assume the role of Tom Kazansky.
"I was extremely grateful that he chose to do the film. "We worked hard to get him in the movie," stated the Mission: Impossible actor.
He revealed: "Originally, he just didn't want to make the movie, saying, 'I don't want to be a supporting character; I want to star in films.'" I was phoning his agent, and Tony Scott was tracking him down, meeting him in an elevator with Val, and saying, 'Please, Val, please.'"
Cruise praised the Heat actors' performance in the film, saying, "You just see what a brilliant actor, fascinating person he was. And in that scene, what I like about what he accomplished and how he performed it is that he understood exactly what tone to strike. He had to play it so you wanted these people to become buddies in the end. Do you understand what I am saying? And I remember acting with him like it was yesterday, when he performed the biting thing."
"You know when you're acting with someone and you can just tell they're on fire. It's exciting. I love it when the scenario simply shifts to a different location. If you watch Top Gun, I believe he only appears for around 10 minutes. "That's the impact of an artist like that," the 62-year-old said, complimenting Kilmer.
Further praising Kilmer's acting abilities, he discussed how the actor "became" his role in Top Gun: Maverick.
"And to come back all those years later, and it was incredible to be on set for Top Gun: Maverick [Joseph Kosinski, 2022], because it felt like time had stopped. We were laughing, and it was wonderful. We started acting, and he became Iceman. Even without saying anything, this person possesses the ability to transform into that character. You can notice how even the smell he gave. "He was Iceman," he explained.
"And you saw the dynamics between these pals. For me, it was incredibly special. I just inform individuals... Take Iceman from the first film and look at his entire road to become Iceman. And he didn't even need to talk. That's what he can do. wonderful, just wonderful. Tom Cruise said, "A gift he had and shared with all of us."
