Amazon's Ring, a smart security device company, unveiled a new artificial intelligence (AI) function on Wednesday. The tool, called Video Descriptions, utilizes generative AI to send motion activity-based text notifications to consumers who have installed the company's video cameras and doorbells. The firm also stated that it is now working to include more AI tools and capabilities into its devices and in-app experience. Notably, Ring stated that the new AI capability will be compatible with all existing doorbells and cameras.
Amazon's Ring introduces its first AI feature
In a press article, Ring's creator, Jamie Siminoff, presented and described the new AI capability. He stated that, as AI advances, the firm is now looking into new ways to apply this technology to improve consumers' lives.
Siminoff introduced Video Descriptions, describing them as "the first cornerstone pieces of our AI work." The new AI capability is designed to help customers distinguish between critical and routine activity inside and outside their homes without having to view footage of every filmed move.
With Video Descriptions, AI models analyze video information using computer vision and provide a written description. This description is then sent as a notice alongside the video content. This means that users may read what the recorded motion is before seeing the video for clarity.
According to the article, the functionality has been fine-tuned such that alerts simply specify the key topic that triggered a motion alert and the action taken by them. Some instances in the post include "A person is walking up the steps with a black dog," and "Two people are peering into a white car in the driveway." Notably, the business did not provide the identity of the AI model that drives this functionality.
Siminoff noted that the Video Descriptions feature will serve as a basis for the firm, with other AI features being developed to increase its potential. One such extension highlighted in the piece is AI-powered notifications that integrate different motion activities across the home into a single alert. Ring also intends to develop a unique anomaly alert function that would be provided just when "something happens on your property that is an anomaly to your property."
Video Descriptions is now available in beta to Ring Home Premium users in Canada and the United States. It is presently only accessible in English and may be activated via the Ring app. This functionality is supported by all of the presently available Ring doorbells and cameras.
