Prince Harry has thrown additional insight on Meghan Markle's early days in the royal limelight, recalling an unpleasant incident from her first Trooping the Colour event in 2018.
The Duke of Sussex characterized the prevailing tone among the royal family that day as "good" and "upbeat" in his biography Spare, noting that the event occurred just after he and Meghan returned from their honeymoon.
Meghan was attending her first formal royal engagement when Kate inquired about her thoughts on the occasion. Meghan, trying a lighthearted response, just said, "Colourful."
The joke, however, did not land as expected.
"A yawning silence threatened to swallow us all whole," Harry remembered, implying the Princess of Wales was not pleased by the comment.
Despite the difficult situation, she maintained her composure during her balcony debut.
According to a lipreader, the Duchess told Harry that she was feeling "nervous" throughout her presentation. Harry, the comforting companion, murmured, "Okay?" leading her to answer, "Yeah, are you?"
While she appeared polished and tranquil waving to the folks around the Mall, the encounter revealed the subtle nervousness behind her controlled veneer.
Fortunately, Harry was at her side, patiently coaching her through her first major royal appearance.
