In quest of affection, Princess Diana attempted to embrace Queen Elizabeth II.
Back in the day, the former Princess of Wales went forward to express her admiration for her mother-in-law, but was turned down by Her Majesty's chilly attitude.
The incident has recently been revived in Prince Harry's memoir.
"There was a popular anecdote about Mummy wanting to hug Granny," he writes in 'Spare. According to eyewitnesses, it was more of a lunge than an embrace; Granny swerved to avoid touch, and the whole affair ended uncomfortably, with averted eyes and whispered apologies. When I attempted to imagine the situation, it reminded me of a foiled pickpocketing or a rugby tap-tackle.
"I wondered, seeing Granny rock out to Brian May, whether Pa ever tried?" Harry said, referring to the Royal Family's tradition of distancing. Most likely not. Granny left him when he was five or six, went on a royal trip that lasted many months, and when she returned, she gave him a strong handshake. Which was maybe more than he ever received from Grandpa. Indeed, Grandpa was so distant, so preoccupied with travel and job, that he scarcely saw Pa during the first three years of his existence."
