Warner Bros. has revealed that the Hogwarts Legacy sequel will have narrative linkages to the Harry Potter television series, which is presently under production at HBO. The game's development studio has been collaborating with the team developing the Max Original series based on the Wizarding World IP, according to David Haddad, president of Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, in an interview published Tuesday. Haddad echoed statements made by Warner Bros. Discovery CFO Gunnar Wiedenfels in September, stating that the Hogwarts Legacy sequel is still a "very big priority" for the studio.
Hogwarts Legacy Sequel To Have Ties With Harry Potter Series
Haddad told Variety that the enormous success of Hogwarts Legacy inspired WB to invest extensively in the Harry Potter IP with the upcoming HBO series, video games, and merchandising. The executive revealed that the Hogwarts Legacy sequel, which is presently in production, will be linked to the Harry Potter Max television series. According to the source, Avalanche Software, the developer of Hogwarts Legacy, has been "coordinating some of the big-picture storytelling elements" of the game's sequel with narrative themes from the Harry Potter HBO series.
Haddad maintained that the Hogwarts Legacy sequel was a "very big priority" for Warner Bros., citing the franchise's promise from the original game. "We have known for some time that fans are looking for more things in this world, and so we're spending a lot of time thinking about that," Haddad told the magazine. "The rest of the company was very curious about what we helped to unlock with Hogwarts Legacy last year," he told me.
In September, Warner Bros. Discovery's chief financial officer Gunnar Wiedenfels stated that a direct sequel to Hogwarts Legacy was a top priority for the company in the future years. "Obviously, a successor to Hogwarts Legacy is one of the biggest priorities in a couple of years down the road," Wiedenfels had allegedly remarked at the Bank of America's 2024 Media, Communications, and Entertainment Conference.
Hogwarts Legacy, an open world action-adventure title that presents a unique tale set in the Harry Potter universe, was a huge success for Warner Bros. Games. According to Variety, the game sold more than 30 million copies by October 2024. Hogwarts Legacy was the top-selling game in 2023, selling 22 million copies by the end of the year.
The Harry Potter HBO television series, which was announced last year, would be based on the seven Harry Potter novels, ushering in a new era for the property. The series will supposedly continue for ten years and will premiere on HBO in 2026.
The Hogwarts Legacy sequel, on the other hand, has no set release date. Warner Bros. Games has, however, continued to release further games based on the Harry Potter IP. In September, the company launched Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions, a game based on the Wizarding World's magical sport, for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series S/X.
