iOS 18.2 is slated to be released next month, along with new Apple Intelligence features for eligible smartphone models. While not all of Apple's handsets will support the new machine learning capabilities, the firm has also been working on new software features, which were revealed in the most recent iOS 18.2 beta 2 release on Monday. When the update is released next month, Apple will purportedly allow consumers to communicate the location of missing things with a trusted individual or an airline staff.
iOS 18.2 to introduce Lost Item Location Sharing Feature
Macrumors discovered a new "Share Item Location" feature introduced to the Find My app in the recent iOS 18.2 beta 2 update, which allows users to share the location of a lost item with a third party. According to the feature's description, it is intended to assist a user in locating a lost item with the assistance of another individual, such as a cab driver or an airline employee who has access to the lost item's location.
When iOS 18.2 is released to all users, the Find My app will have a feature that allows you to share the location of an item and produce a link that can be accessed on any device to view where the lost item is on the map. According to Apple, the location may be shared "with an airline or a trusted person".
This implies beta testers may now share the location with not just their contacts and Apple device users, but even airline personnel who are unlikely to be on their contact list. It also works with Windows, Android, and Apple's own products.
Apple has also implemented certain restrictions on the new capability, ostensibly to safeguard user privacy. For starters, a link generated via the Share Item Location function is only active for one week, or until the item is returned to the owner. According to the magazine, Apple would also display the number of users that viewed the link.
Meanwhile, another function called "Show Contact Info" allows other users to connect to a lost device and view contact information such as the owner's email address or phone number. This feature is optional, although it may let someone obtain the owner's information when returning an item.
