Director Ridley Scott has made a huge improvement to Gladiator II.
The upcoming film depicts twin Emperors Geta and Caracalla, played by Fred Hechinger and Joseph Quinn, as turbulent leaders.
Similarly, Joaquin Phoenix's Emperor Commodus in the 2000 film was known for his volatility. Director Ridley Scott argues that Roman kings' unpredictable behavior is based on historical facts.
"People forget that all the wealthy, high-end senatorial Roman aristocracy would live on water which was piped through lead pipes and lead tanks," Scott said The Hollywood Reporter.
"People do not think about that. Your options are water or wine. When you drink water, it passes through a lead system that might be 200 years old. No surprise they're fucking insane. "They're all halfway to Alzheimer's."
According to Science Magazine, "High-born Romans sipped beverages cooked in lead vessels and channeled spring water into their homes through lead pipes."
Scott revealed that his first edit of Gladiator II was about four hours long, and he is considering publishing an extended version. The filmmaker is already planning Gladiator III, with Mescal as Lucius, who seeks punishment for his father's death.

"With rage in his heart and the future of the empire at stake, Lucius looks to the past to find the strength and honor needed to return the glory of Rome to its people."
