Oppo revealed on Tuesday that ColorOS 15 will leverage Google's in-house artificial intelligence (AI) model Gemini to power certain of its features. Along with the significant operating system upgrade, the business is offering Circle to Search. Both of these capabilities will initially appear on the Oppo Find X8 series, which was released internationally on Thursday. Notably, the Chinese smartphone manufacturer announced the ColorOS 15 upgrade and additional features last month. However, at the time, the Google AI functions were not disclosed.
Oppo Introduces Gemini, Circle for Search in ColorOS 15
In a press release, Oppo outlined the new ColorOS 15 features. The Chinese smartphone brand already has a number of AI functions in its handsets; however, they are developed in-house and rely on the company's local major language models. However, with ColorOS 15, users will be able to access Gemini-powered capabilities.
The business stated that the Gemini 1.5 Pro and Gemini 1.5 Flash AI models will power some of the features in the next version of the operating system. Gemini will be merged into Oppo's Notes & Documents app. While the features were not specified, the business indicated that Google's AI will assist users by rewriting the structure and improving the language of the content in these applications.
In addition, Gemini will power an AI Recording Summary function. It can summarize speech recordings and provide meeting notes and overviews. While this is the first time Oppo smartphones will directly incorporate Gemini functionalities, the firm may include further third-party AI functions in the future.
However, the most notable feature is the addition of Circle to Search to Oppo smartphones. Once it is operational, the visual lookup capability may be used by long pressing the home button or menu bar. Users will be able to search for any on-screen element without having to switch applications.
In addition, the ColorOS 15 upgrade will introduce the Gemini app to smartphones. The app's integration will also allow users to designate Gemini as their default AI helper and take benefit of its features. The app will be upgraded with the Gemini Live function, which allows for two-way audio contact with the AI.
Oppo also revealed that the new AI functions with ColorOS 15 would initially be available on the recently launched Oppo Find X8 series. There is no news on which other Oppo smartphones will receive similar AI capabilities, or when.
