Elton John lost his ability to see.
The musician has disclosed that he lost his vision after battling a "severe" virus. The 77-year-old music veteran revealed the news on Sunday night when speaking to guests at London's Dominion Theatre following the premiere of The Devil Wears Prada: The Musical.
"As some of you may be aware, I have had health concerns and have now lost my sight. I wasn't able to watch the performance, but I appreciated it," John told the crowd, according to the Daily Mail.
The Grammy-winning performer thanked his spouse, David Furnish, for his support at this difficult time.
"To my husband, who's been my rock, because I haven't been able to come to many of the previews because as you know, I've lost my eyesight, so it's hard for me to see it, but I love to hear it," the actor said in a TikTok video.
"And, gosh, it sounded great tonight! OK! "Thank you for coming."
John, who created the original soundtrack for The Devil Wears Prada: The Musical, applauded the performance, which stars Tony nominee Vanessa Williams as Miranda Priestly.
Several important individuals attended the charity event, including Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, Lily Collins, and Elizabeth Hurley.
This isn't the first time John has discussed his visual concerns. In September, he announced that he had "limited vision in one eye" due to a "severe eye infection" that occurred over the summer.
"I am healing, but it is a very slow process, and it will be some time before vision returns to the impacted eye," he stated in a statement at the time.
"I am so grateful for the excellent team of doctors and nurses and my family, who have taken such good care of me over the last several weeks."
