Grant Harrold, a former royal butler, claims that King Charles had a distinct preference for Christmas gifts.
While the 76-year-old king prepares to spend the holiday season at Sandringham with his family, Harrold has revealed what gifts the King actually values—and which to avoid.
"His Majesty dislikes receiving anything extravagant or expensive," Harrold explained, adding that such gestures would make the King uncomfortable.
"He would be ashamed if you spent a lot of money on him. He would probably reply, "That's lovely, but you really shouldn't have."
Charles prefers thoughtful, meaningful presents with a personal touch. Harrold, who worked closely with the royal family, recounted his favorite presents for the King.
The practice of presenting modest and meaningful presents is a defining feature of royal festivities, demonstrating a preference for feeling over extravagance—a custom shared by King Charles and the late Queen Elizabeth II.
When it comes to holiday shopping, the Royal Family's preferences may surprise you. Former royal butler Grant Harrold recently stated that the royals, including King Charles, do not shop primarily at high-end retailers.
"Everyone assumes the royals only shop in the poshest places, but they go to the same shops as we do," Harrold told me.
"The Queen would often pop into her local shops in Ballater village near Balmoral," according to him. "The royals enjoy a bargain just like the rest of us."
