Jason Knauf, a former royal assistant, has described a shocking incident that occurred at the announcement of Princess Charlotte's birth in 2015.
In an interview with 60 Minutes Australia, Knauf said that he misplaced a vital piece of paper holding sensitive information on the newborn princess.
"We weren't going to announce it for another couple of hours," Knauf told me afterwards. "And I took this piece of paper to go compose this press release. I'm still out there with hundreds of journalists, trying to maintain a game face, and I couldn't find the piece of paper, which I believe I lost somewhere on the street."
Fortunately, the sensitive material stayed confidential because the paper was never discovered by anybody else.
"But somewhere on that street the entire time was a piece of paper that said there had been a little princess born, what time, and how much she weighed," Knauf told me.
Knauf was on edge until the formal announcement. "It was one of those things, like, heart in mouth until we got to the announcement, and I got through it," he told me.
Knauf never found the lost paper, but he was relieved that it had not fallen into the wrong hands. "I never discovered the piece of paper, and neither did the media. So that was all that mattered.
