Betsy Arakawa, Gene Hackman's wife, was seen on surveillance video in her dying moments before their mummified remains were discovered at their New Mexico home only weeks later.
Hackman died at 95 from heart disease and Alzheimer's problems, while Arakawa died at 65 from hantavirus, a rare and fatal sickness carried by rats.
Authorities believe Arakawa died on February 12 and Hackman six days later, but it took weeks for their remains to be located.
In video footage released by New Mexico investigators on Tuesday, Arakawa is seen peacefully utilizing the self-checkout at a Sprouts Farmers Market in Santa Fe only the day before her death, about 4 p.m. on February 11.
She is later seen on video at the adjacent Shine Pet Food store.
The excellent classical pianist was observed alone, dressed in blue jeans, a dark coat, a scarf, and a black face mask, seeming calm and without any symptoms of discomfort or strange conduct.
Arakawa had been the primary caregiver for the Oscar-winning actor Gene Hackman, whose health had deteriorated dramatically in his final years.
