CD Projekt Red is developing a sequel to Cyberpunk 2077, dubbed Project Orion. The Polish firm has kept quiet about the project since it was initially revealed in 2022, but a few information about the game have emerged over time. Now, Cyberpunk franchise creator Mike Pondsmith has revealed additional details regarding the Cyberpunk 2077 sequel, stating that the game will have a second setting in addition to Night City.
Cyberpunk 2077's sequel will feature a new location
Pondsmith, the creator of the Cyberpunk tabletop RPG that inspired Cyberpunk 2077's setting, characters, and plot, discussed Project Orion in a recent interview with Polish station TVGRY at the Digital Dragons Conference. He stated that, while he was not as actively engaged with the sequel as he was with the original game, he had seen the screenplays.
"Last week, I was walking about, talking to different departments and checking what they had, 'Oh see, this is the latest cyberware, what do you think?' Pondsmith remarked, "Oh yeah, that's pretty good; it works here."
He indicated that Project Orion will have a second metropolis in addition to the previous game's Night metropolis, but did not go into detail about the new location other than a hint of how it might feel.
"I spent a lot of time talking to one of the environment experts, and he was telling how the new site in Orion... because there's another city we go to. Pondsmith remarked, "I'm not telling you anything else, but there's another city we'll be visiting."
He revealed that Night City was "still there" in the Cyberpunk 2077 sequel and described the second city as "Chicago gone wrong".
"I remember looking at it and thinking, 'Yeah, I understand the feel that you're trying for, and this really works, and it doesn't seem like Blade Runner — it feels more like Chicago gone wrong. I answered, 'Yeah, I can see this working.'"
Project Orion Details
Including two fully-fledged cities would significantly broaden the scope of Project Orion, making it a far larger game than Cyberpunk 2077, especially given the detail featured in Night City in the first installment. CD Projekt Red enhanced the city in the Phantom Liberty expansion by introducing a new area called Dogtown.
While a second setting is a huge disclosure, CD Projekt Red has kept details about the sequel under wraps since it was introduced as Project Orion in 2022. In its announcement at the time, the company stated that the game will expand "the Cyberpunk franchise further and continue harnessing the potential of this dark future universe."
Earlier this year, a job description for an available position at CD Projekt Red's Boston office, which is leading production on the Cyberpunk 2077 sequel, stated that the game will include "the most realistic and reactive crowd system in any game to date".
Project Orion is being developed using Epic Games' Unreal Engine 5 and will most likely be released on PC and current-generation platforms. CD Projekt, on the other hand, has yet to establish a launch date, and the game is most likely years away from release.
The company is also developing on The Witcher 4, which may not be released till 2027. A number of other The Witcher games are in the works, including a complete remake of The Witcher, the series' initial game, which was published in 2007.
