Grand Theft Auto fans will have to wait another year to get their hands on the most recent edition of the iconic video game.
The release date for Grand Theft Auto 6, the newest edition in the series, has been moved back to May 26, 2026, according to a statement released by Rockstar Games on Friday. The game was slated to be published later this year.
"We sincerely apologize for the delay," Rockstar Games stated.
"With every game we have released, the goal has always been to try and exceed your expectations, and Grand Theft Auto VI is no exception," the developer said. "We hope you understand that we need this extra time to deliver at the level of quality you expect and deserve."
Grand Theft Auto, also known as GTA in the gaming community, has sold millions of copies worldwide. However, fans have been waiting more than a decade for a new title. The most recent edition, GTA 5, was published in 2013 and has sold over 200 million copies.
Analysts estimate that GTA 6 will be the most profitable entertainment industry launch ever, albeit the delayed release may decrease income in the short term.
Wedbush Securities analysts forecast $6.35 billion in revenue for fiscal year 2026, compared to earlier projections of $8 billion. However, they claim that the delay will have no influence on GTA 6's lifetime sales.
Wedbush believes that the game will cost $80 or more, which is comparable to current Nintendo and Xbox goods.
When it finally hit shelves next year, fans will meet Lucia, the game's first female protagonist, who is arrested at the start and subsequently emerges with a male companion, as shown in the 2023 teaser, which has received millions of views.
Strauss Zelnick, CEO of Take-Two Interactive, which owns Rockstar Games, defended the decision to postpone GTA 6's release date.
"We support fully Rockstar Games taking additional time to realize their creative vision for Grand Theft Auto VI, which promises to be a groundbreaking, blockbuster entertainment experience that exceeds audience expectations," Zelnick tweeted, as reported by Bloomberg.
