Prince Harry faces a charity controversy as horrendous human rights crimes are verified.
Prince Harry is embroiled in another big charity crisis, as African Parks, a nonprofit to which he is associated, has confessed that its rangers violated human rights in Congo Brazzaville.
This follows a shocking exposé released in January, which alleged that the charity's rangers beat assaulted, waterboarded, and raped villagers to keep them away from the ancestral woodlands.
Now, the organization has issued a long statement disclosing that the charges were reviewed by Omnia Strategy, a London-based law firm, and that human rights abuses occurred. However, their statement made no mention of Prince Harry or claim that he was aware of the rangers' wrongdoing.
In its long statement, the organization noted: "African Parks acknowledges that, in some incidents, human rights violations have occurred, and we deeply regret the pain and suffering caused to the victims." There is no room for any kind of misuse in the name of conservation."
They said, "Omnia's examination also revealed various flaws in our systems and processes that were insufficient for the amount of responsibility assigned to us, notably in the early years of our administration of Odzala. We are dedicated to addressing these concerns and protecting human rights across our activities...
They also promised to take action against the rangers responsible for the human rights violations, saying, "Specifically, in Odzala, we will take action against staff members implicated in previously unknown incidents or those that had not been adequately dealt with, where sufficient evidence is available." African Parks will develop a tailored framework to govern the provision of remedies in the event of human rights violations. To further understand the risks connected with park management, we will conduct a second human rights impact assessment as a follow-up to the 2021 research.
Prince Harry was the President of African Parks for five years. He resigned in 2023 and became a board member.
