Grand Theft Auto 4 takes place in Liberty City, Rockstar's rendition of New York City |
Grand Theft Auto 6 has been pushed back from its intended Fall 2025 release date to next year, but keen fans may be able to play a previous game from the series in a whole different avatar. Rockstar Games might be preparing a Grand Theft Auto 4 adaptation for current-generation platforms for release in 2025. GTA 4 was launched in 2008 for the PS3, Xbox 360, and PC, although it has yet to be published on the PS5 and Xbox Series S/X.
Rockstar reportedly working on a GTA 4 port
According to a source, the famous GTA game may finally be converted to current platforms, with Rockstar planning a release later this year. The information comes from Tez2 on GTA forums (via Rockstar Games news feed @videotechuk_ on X), who claims the port is in the works at Rockstar.
"Someone at R* (Rockstar) hinted at the IV port, and by now it should've gone up a year in development," the tipster claimed in answer to a question on GTA forums on Sunday. "We may see it released later this year. And it's one more reason, in addition to the other ones, why the LCPP mod was removed."
The tipster is alluding to the fact that Rockstar removed the Liberty City Preservation Project mod earlier this year. The popular mod added a playable version of GTA IV's Liberty City layout to Grand Theft Auto 5.
The removal of the Liberty City mod from GTA 5 has fueled anticipation that Rockstar's version of New York City may emerge in GTA 6, especially since the game's second trailer made multiple references to Liberty City in the upcoming Grand Theft Auto. Lucia, one of GTA 6's protagonists, is revealed to be from Liberty City, and numerous automobiles in the second GTA 6 teaser bear Liberty City license plates.
Max Payne remakes
In addition to a GTA 4 port/remaster for current platforms, Tez2 said in his post that Rockstar may still be developing a Max Payne 3 port, which could be included in a package or a "Definitive Edition," with remakes of both Max Payne 1 and 2.
Rockstar has not revealed any intentions for possible Grand Theft Auto and Max Payne remasters or remakes. In 2021, the company released Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy - The Definitive Edition, a collection of three classic GTA titles remastered for current platforms.
Grand Theft Auto 4 was launched in 2008 for PS3 and Xbox 360 to tremendous critical acclaim. It is widely regarded as one of the best games of all time, and fans have long desired that it be remade for newer systems. The game has received two significant expansion packs, The Lost and Damned and The Ballad of Gay Tony, which provide new protagonists and storylines. A remastered edition of GTA 4 might include both narrative expansions in a single package alongside the main game, similar to the Complete Edition of the game on PC.
