Tom Cruise is actively developing new concepts for the third installment of Top Gun.
The 62-year-old American actor and film producer will play Ethan Hunt in the final film in the Mission Impossible franchise, Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning, which will be released on May 21, 2025.
In a recent interview with Australia's Today, Cruise claimed that he is "working on" a sequel to his 2022 thriller Top Gun: Maverick, as well as a sequel to his 1990 NASCAR movie Days of Thunder.
He said, "Yeah, we're thinking and talking about a variety of ideas, what we might accomplish, and what's conceivable. It took me 35 years to figure out Top Gun: Maverick, so we're talking about all of these projects, including Days of Thunder and Top Gun: Maverick."
The four-time Oscar nominee said, "There are countless additional films that we are actively working on right now. I'm continually filming, preparing, and releasing films." (sic)
Notably, Cruise initially played Captain Pete 'Maverick' Mitchell in the original 1986 aviator film Top Gun, and he revisited his character in the 2022 sequel Top Gun: Maverick, which grossed $1.4 billion worldwide and received an Oscar nomination for Best Picture.
Cruise just completed a picture with Alejandro Iñárritu, who also worked on The Revenant, which will be released soon. That was an incredible experience, and [Christopher McQuarrie] and I are always working on various things."
The unnamed film by Alejandro González Iñárritu tells the story of a powerful man who seeks to become a savior of mankind by embarking on a dangerous expedition ahead of a calamity he orchestrated.
Before finishing, it is important to clarify that Iñárritu is slated to release on October 2, 2026.
