Apple is apparently contemplating a huge update of its virtual speech assistant Siri, making it more conversational. The Cupertino-based tech behemoth has already unveiled the redesigned interface for the voice assistant, and further functions are anticipated to be added early next year, allowing it to do app-related activities and gain a deeper comprehension of user requests. According to reports, the iPhone maker is reportedly planning to upgrade Siri to the level of ChatGPT, with improved natural language interactions and other features.
Apple is reportedly working on improving Siri using AI
According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, while the stated Siri enhancements increase its capabilities, Apple intends to compete with ChatGPT and Gemini by further enhancing the voice assistant. According to unidentified sources, the tech giant intends to deploy more complex large language models (LLMs), all created in-house, to make Siri more conversational.
Siri is supposed to be capable of managing back-and-forth discussions as well as "more sophisticated requests in a quicker fashion" with this version. Gurman alleged that the new Siri is internally known as LLM Siri. The AI-powered Siri will also be able to produce messages and do other AI chatbot activities, according to the article.
Apple is expected to reveal the new Siri as part of the iOS 19 and macOS 16 upgrades, which will be released in the third quarter of 2025. However, the functionalities are not expected to be supplied until early 2026.
Interestingly, the IT behemoth has also announced new job openings related to the purported feature. Earlier this month, the company advertised a Senior Machine Learning Engineer, Audio Generation, Siri, and Information Intelligence position, with the job description stating, "You will join a team that is redefining computing, creating groundbreaking conversational assistant technologies for both large scale systems and new client devices, and with the people who built the intelligent assistants."
Notably, compatible Apple device users may look forward to Siri's integration with first- and third-party apps via a technology known as Apple Intents. It will allow the virtual assistant to carry out app-specific activities. The next upgrade, which is part of Apple Intelligence, will also allow Siri to draw on user data to become more contextually aware and fulfill even imprecise requests from users. This upgrade is planned to be released early next year.
