Joker: Folie à Deux's box office did not quite laugh its way to the cash, and Warner Bros. Discovery's CEO, David Zaslav, is taking notice.
The picture, which was released in October 2024, made $204.7 million worldwide but did not make as much of an impact as its predecessor did.
Addressing investors on November 7, Zaslav acknowledged the need for "more consistency" in the company's studio releases, describing Folie à Deux as a "disappointing" result.
"Even in an industry of hits and misses, we must acknowledge that our studios business must deliver more consistency," he stated, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
"Inconsistency also remains an issue at our motion picture studio, as reinforced recently by the disappointing results of Joker 2," he said, according to Variety.
But it's not all bad at Warner Bros.
Zaslav highlighted some of the year's greatest achievements, such as Beetlejuice, which grossed over $450 million, and the smash hit Barbie. He also stated that the TV division is "on track to have its more profitable year in scripted content in five years."
Adding to Folie à Deux's difficulties, it scored a D CinemaScore, the lowest ever for a comic book film, worse than Fantastic 4 (2015). For comparison, the original Joker received a B+ in 2019, while this year's Madame Web and Borderlands received slightly higher grades, C+ and D+, respectively.
