Wicked's film version has a great Easter egg in the One Short Day sequence.
Kristin Chenoweth and Idina Menzel, the original Broadway Glinda and Elphaba, make an unexpected visit, leading the audience through a colorful theatrical production about Oz's past.
"There was no way that we wouldn't invite them to be a part of this," director Jon M. Chu told The Hollywood Reporter.
"The dilemma for us was, how and how much are they willing to put into it, and how much can the tale handle? Because they're such legendary characters, particularly in these situations."
He said, "It was like a madness. [We suggested], 'Let's make them the biggest stars in Oz. Let us bring these legendary Oz legends to the stage and have them explain the history of Oz. They would be the wise women of Oz." It simply appeared to make sense. And [composer] Steven Schwartz — it may have actually came from him from my memory — said, 'I know precisely how to do it' because we needed some knowledge about the tale of Oz's background, and it would be them, so it would be more important."
Chu revealed that they only had one day to film this scene after smuggling Menzel and Chenoweth into London.
"We spent one night in the midst of the night, from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. on a wet night. The time they sung the songs and had their legendary moments was lovely. The day was a therapeutic experience for those involved. I answered, "This is in honor of you."
"The entire process of producing this film is an honor for you because we want you to feel what we did when we first saw it, when I went to the theater before it debuted on Broadway, what it felt like to see Elphaba and Glinda capture our hearts, something you will never have the opportunity to experience. And now we get to do it for you. Ari is weeping the entire time.
"Cynthia cried the entire time. There was a lot of affection on that set that day. And so I'm pleased that they came out. I was not involved in the transaction. I don't know what it takes to bring them there. All I knew was that they were ready and willing. "We only had one day to do it."
Wicked, which is currently in cinemas, also features Michelle Yeoh as Madame Morrible, Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero, Marissa Bode as Nessarose, Keala Settle as Miss Coddle, and Bowen Yang as Pfannee, among others.
