According to reports, Apple is considering developing improved versions of its laptops and headsets that allow cellular networking. The business is claimed to be planning the release of its first consumer electronics item with its own cellular modem, the rumored fourth-generation iPhone SE model, which is set to appear in early 2025. The company's modem is intended to replace a Qualcomm component, paving the way for thinner iPhone models and, eventually, a foldable iPhone.
Apple may provide Mac computers with cellular support by 2026
According to Bloomberg, Apple intends to introduce its own modem, codenamed Sinope, with the successor to the iPhone SE in 2022. According to the magazine, this will be the first part of a three-year strategy to integrate the company's modem into all of its gadgets.
One of the primary advantages of Apple adopting its own modem is a significant decrease in size. Later in 2025, the firm is planned to release a new iPhone 17 "Air" model to replace the Plus model, which is likely to be Apple's thinnest iPhone model ever.
A smaller iPhone body may also pave the path for another area that Apple has yet to explore: foldables. Rivals Samsung and Huawei have previously released clamshell-style and book-style foldable phones, while Apple "continues to explore" the notion, according to Bloomberg.
The three-year plan to introduce the company's in-house modem to its other products is said to include support for cellular connectivity in the company's future Mac computers (which aren't due until 2026) and forthcoming generations of its Vision Pro headset.
Apple now supports Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity on its Mac laptops and the Vision Pro headset, but adding cellular compatibility would expand connectivity choices on these products. According to the source, the company's iPad and iPad Pro (which are already available in cellular models) would receive the new modem in 2025 and 2026, respectively.
