On Tuesday, the fourth day of its 12-day distribution timetable, OpenAI made the Canvas tool available for general use. Canvas was introduced in October as a sandbox-style pop-up window where users could make inline modifications, formatting, and other changes to text and code. Users can make their own updates or mark a specific section and request that the AI make changes. Canvas, according to the business, is best suited for creative writing and coding. This tool is now open to all ChatGPT users worldwide.
OpenAI Canvas Tool
After releasing the full version of the o1 AI model and the Sora video creation model, OpenAI has taken its Canvas tool out of preview and made it available to all ChatGPT users. The feature is based on the GPT-4o model, and access to it is necessary for use. This is significant since the free tier of ChatGPT only provides restricted access to this AI model.
Canvas is essentially an interactive and collaborative sandbox window in which humans and AI may work together on certain tasks. Typically, ChatGPT gets a prompt and produces a response. If a user is dissatisfied with the results, they can input an alternative prompt or provide more information to improve the response. However, this trial-and-error process is time-consuming and may need numerous efforts to achieve something near to ideal results. With code, it is more difficult to direct the AI to a specific fault and instruct it to solve it.
However, with the introduction of Canvas, ChatGPT users will notice a new "View tools" icon located at the bottom of the text field, between the attachment and web search choices. The Picture (Dall-E) and Canvas modes are available in the View tools. When a user picks Canvas and sends a prompt, the chatbot launches a little pop-up window to produce the response.
Once created, users can manually format or change the output. They may also highlight a word or a piece of the text and input a prompt to make modifications to that specific region. This granular editing mechanism is intended to assist users get the desired outcome and resolve small difficulties without leaving the ChatGPT interface.
