Prince Harry directly addressed the current controversy about his six-year marriage to Meghan Markle.
The Duke of Sussex discussed the public intrigue and scrutiny around his marriage during an on-stage conversation with New York Times columnist Andrew Ross Sorkin at Dealbook Summit 2024 in New York.
Sorkin informed Harry that he "Google Newsed" him and that there had been a lot of discussion about their solitary adventures and what it meant for them.
"Because you invited me, you should have known!" Prince Harry joked as the audience laughed.
Sorkin said, "True. Is this usual for you? The second there's an article—she's in California, you're in New York—they say, 'Well, what is going on with these two, right? Is it a positive thing for you that people are so interested in you?"
"No, that's definitely not a good thing," Harry responded, referring to the rumored purchase of his Portuguese property and his marriage. "Apparently. We've bought and moved houses ten or twelve times. We've allegedly divorced maybe ten or twelve times. So, "What?"
He went on; "It's hard to keep up with, but that's why you just sort of ignore it."
"The people I feel most sorry about are the trolls," Harry explained. "Their hopes are simply raised and developed, like, 'Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes,' and then nothing happens. So, I feel bad for them. Honestly, I do."
Harry also noted the spotlight on him, stating that he had "no doubt" that his talk with Sorkin "will be spun or twisted somehow against me, and maybe you yourself will be trolled relentlessly."
"For that, I can only apologize, but you did invite me, so it's not my fault," laughed Prince Harry.
The remark follows claims that Prince Harry and Meghan were "separating professionally" because their joint projects did not receive much attention. According to reports, the couple acquired a holiday house in Portugal in order to earn a 'Golden Visa' that would allow them to travel freely around Europe.
