Selena Gomez recently highlighted why she believes that coming up about mental health is not for the fainthearted.
In a recent interview with Billboard Español on April 24, the Only Murders in the Building actress emphasized the need of mental health discussions.
"At the end of the day, I believe it is important to speak out about issues that matter to you, whether you are famous or not," said the 32-year-old, who will be honored as Woman of the Year at the 2025 Billboard Latin Women in Music event on May 1.
Selena clarified: "The conversation surrounding mental health is not for the faint heart because you are putting yourself out there and trust me there will be a lot of opinions that come at you for even having the nerve to say anything at all."
During the conversation, the Emilia Perez actress also discussed her first response to opening out about her struggle.
"It was scary to be that vulnerable, and I never wanted anyone to think I was a victim," said the singer-turned-actress.
Selena stated that by sharing her personal journey, she may be able to "help others,"
"I will take any negative opinions that come with that because I see the bigger picture of how the conversations have changed around mental health," the vocalist said.
In October 2023, Selena held her first annual Rare Impact Fund Benefit to benefit mental health organizations.
Speaking during the occasion, the singer and actress stated that she had "struggled with the world inside my head for a long time".
"I experienced hopelessness at times. And in 2020, I was diagnosed with bipolar illness. "To be honest, everything changed very quickly," she recounted.
Meanwhile, Selena launched a documentary called Selena Gomez: My Mind & Me to chronicle her mental health experience.
